Your Guide to Administering Semaglutide Safely at Home
Semaglutide is administered as a once-weekly, subcutaneous (under-the-skin) injection. It’s quick, virtually painless, and easy to do with guidance from our team. Here's how:
Preparation
Gather Supplies: Ensure you have the following items:
-
Semaglutide vial
-
Syringes (provided in your kit)
-
Alcohol pads
-
A clean, flat surface
Wash Hands:
- Clean your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.
Understanding the Syringe
Reading the Syringe
-
Locate the unit markings on the syringe. There are small lines with numbers indicating the dosage. Each tic mark represents 2
units.
-
Ensure you know your prescribed dose in units (e.g., 8 units, 16 units). Ignore any
discussion about milligrams and focus on units only.
Filling the Syringe
-
Pull the plunger back to your prescribed dose (e.g., 8 units). The vials sent to you
will have a capacity of 100 units
Drawing up the Medication
Prepare the Vial
-
Clean the top of the semaglutide vial with an alcohol pad.
-
Allow it to dry for a few seconds.
Draw up the Dose
- Insert the syringe needle into the vial's rubber stopper.
-
Push the plunger down to inject air (this helps draw the medication).
-
Invert the vial and slowly pull back the plunger to the correct dosage mark.
Remove Air Bubbles
-
Tap the syringe gently to move any air bubbles to the top.
-
Push the plunger slightly to expel the air without losing medication.
Administering the Injection
Select the Injection Site
-
Abdomen (avoiding a 2-inch radius around the navel). If the abdomen isn’t
preferred you can use the outer thigh, or upper arm.
-
Rotate injection sites to prevent skin irritation.
Clean the Skin
-
Use an alcohol pad to clean the injection site and let it dry.
Inject the Medication
-
Hold the syringe like a pencil.
-
Pinch the skin gently at the injection site.
-
Insert the needle at a 90-degree angle (or 45 degrees if you have less fat).
-
Push the plunger slowly until all the medication is injected.
Dispose of the Syringe
-
Remove the needle carefully and discard it in a sharps container. Alternatively, an
used milk jug or clothing detergent bottle can be used and saved to dispose of future
needles.
